Book Raj Thackeray for sedition, urges PIL at Bombay HC

Mumbai, May 5 (IANS): A social activist filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) case with the Bombay High Court on Thursday seeking sedition charges against Maharashtra President Navnirman Sena, Raj Thackeray, and a restriction on his movements for attempting to create troubles.
The PIL was filed by India’s President Against Corruption, Hemant Patil, asking for a First Information Report against Raj Thackeray on the issue of removal of loudspeakers from mosques and threats to play Hanuman Chalisa at double volume to counter the “azans”.
Patil said on May 1, Raj Thackeray warned that if loudspeakers were not removed from all mosques by May 4, his activists would shout Hanuman Chalisa, for which he was later booked by the police from Aurangabad.
He also accused the MNS leader of attempts to break the peace by alleging Nationalist Congress Party chairman Sharad Pawar was “anti-Hindu” and resorted to caste politics.
The IAC chief said that although the Aurangabad police booked Raj on light sections, they did not raise sedition charges against him for making provocative statements that could obstruct the peace and harmony between communities.
Accordingly, Patil sought proper instructions from the Bombay High Court to order an investigation and file an FIR for offenses of public nuisance, breach of the peace and charges of sedition in the general public interest.
He also urged the court to stop Raj Thackeray from holding press conferences, making visits to different places to propagate the removal of the loudspeakers from the mosque and countering by playing Hanuman Chalisa there.
