FEFCO launches test methodology for corrugated cardboard printed in food contact

The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) has published the FEFCO test methodology for printed corrugated board in food contact. At EU level, there are no specific regulations for paper and cardboard.
The general requirements for all materials in contact with foodstuffs set out in Framework Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 and in Regulation (EC) 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice for materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, are applied to paper and cardboard, including corrugated cardboard. To close this gap, FEFCO has developed a methodology for conformity testing of printed corrugated cardboard used in food applications. The methodology offers a two-step approach, combining an officially approved simulant for food contact paper and board and testing with real food as confirmation. The aim of this document is to provide a methodological tool that can be used by corrugated board producers and their suppliers when assessing compliance with EU legislation.
Eleni Despotou, CEO of FEFCO, said: “FEFCO has developed the testing methodology to support its members and to create a common basis of communication between corrugated cardboard manufacturers and suppliers to ensure food safety. packed.
